The Lynx X10 interface gives me a two way comunication path between a serial port and X10 powerline signals in the house. Whenever the Lynx interface sees X10 powerline signal activity it sends a message to the computers serial port, and conversely the computer can send an ASCII string as a command to the Lynx and the appropriate X10 powerline signal will be generated. The machine with the Lynx attached runs a slight different version of the the SmarthomeServer Visual Basic code which manages this serial port. There is no other API software that my VB code is calling, my code interacts directly with the serial port and creates/interprets the protocol documented for the Lynx. Any powerline messages the SmarthomeServer sees from the Lynx are presented to TheBrain via the X10React CORBA server and the brain uses the X10Send API to tell the Lynx to send out X10 control signals.
